Bob Tedrow recently completed a couple of four-sided concertinas patterned after a 26 button Henry Harley "Anglified-German" concertina originally owned by my Great-great-grandfather. Mine was the second he built, a 30 button in Bb/F, with modern Anglo action rather than the German style works of the original. It's a delight to play, and sounds great. Here they are side-by-side:

Nice, Bill.

I have the other one that Tedrow built. It doesn't have the air lever that yours does--just the usual air button. It is back with Bob right now...the air button was placed too near my ungainly big thumb for efficient bellows control, and Bob has kindly agreed to move it. Very nice instrument....and mine is quarter comma mean tone temperament, which makes the chords very nice.

I stood around the shop for a couple of hours and watched Bob put the action (the left side I think)in your Harley. I sure wish it had been finished so I could have snuck a couple of tunes out of it. As it turns out I never even got to hear how it sounded.

If it was mine that he was working on...moving an air button...I can tell you that it sounds great! In particular, I asked him to use quarter comma mean tone tuning on it, which takes the sting out of the thirds when chording.

Can you elaborate on the tuning please? what are the home keys and what keys do you play in?
I live in Sheffield. I play mainly C/G Jeffries and Crabb for Irish and English traditional music. Just taken up Jeffries Duet in C.

It is a normal CG layout, with a quarter comma mean tone temperament instead of the usual equal temperament. There have been several past threads that discussed temperament and concertinas.

Cheers,

Thanks Dan I quite fancy something like that but a sort of cross beween a melodeon and anglo maybe D/G likea melodeon RHS but separate notes on LHS for chords. Twin reeds like an old German anglo , an Octave apart.

Bob would have a hard time cramming in the double reeds, it's really not very big. With a regular Wheatstone layout and a Bb/F reed set, mine looks to be a bit of a squeeze.

There are a couple of sound files of Bob playing Dan's, in both equal temperment and quarter comma mean tone tunings, on Bob Tedrow's website. I'll try to record a clip of mine in the next few weeks.
