Greg Jowaisas
I'm working toward the restoration of a rosewood New Model Lachenal. It is unusual in that the fret work is quite intricate and reminds me of the fret work seen in Edeophones. Has anyone come across one of these or something similar? I'd love to have more information. Greg Jowaisas
I emailed Chris Algar from whom I bought this concertina a number of years ago as a project. Chris says he cannot recall ever seeing this fret work pattern in a wood end New Model. Anyone else like to comment? Greg
Geoff Wooff
Looks nice Greg! Hope it sounds and plays as well as it looks. There is plenty of volume coming out of my wooden ended New Model (project) with its far fewer fret 'windows' .Yours looks to have a similar fret patern to the ones used on the metal enders... so it ought to have a good amount of power... perhaps it sounds like the metal endeds but without the sharp edge ? Wolf Molkentin
Anyone else like to comment? I'm limited to just mentioning the minority of "Excelsior" and "Inimitable" concertinas which were lacking the open fretwork around the buttons. Standard seems to have been the quite open ends as with my own instrument. Maybe due to the generally louder tone of the New Model the more closed fretwork had become standard with just some exceptions like this one... Best wishes - Wolf
Greg Jowaisas
In its present state (second tuning pass, no action work) I'd say the instrument has a "clearer" (cleaner?) sound than the New models I've played. (Less of a "clarinet" type resonance that I associate with New Models) The volume is healthy but not out of the ordinary for a wood end New Model. More of this as the instrument's refurb progresses. BTW I spoke with Colin Dipper who also said he could not recall seeing a similar fret pattern in a wood end New Model. There seem to be similarities with the metal end New model fret work but note the "bowtie" cut outs between the buttons which I've only seen on Edeos and certain Wheatstones (81 fret Aeolas and Model 6 hex) Greg Edited May 16, 2014 by Greg Jowaisas
