Theodore Kloba
Here's another one.Search on concertina and you will find 2 tunes with Bertram Levy on anglo. Play them by clicking on “Click here to display item”. Search on Levy and you'll get 20 hits. On the rest, he plays banjo. I've had this MP3 downloaded since the original post in February. I just went back to the site for more information about the song, and discovered that there's an associated track with Alan Jabbour (Fiddle) speaking about the history of the song. He mentions that it started out as an Irish lament. Anybody know the original title? Any transcriptions or other recordings? A search for "Daddy Rock the Babies to Sleep" only turns up that one site (and probably now this one!). "Daddy Rock the Babies to Sleep": Song Story Addendum: After listening closely to the story, I realize he calls it "Rocking the Babies to Sleep." which turns up a lot more search hits, not least of which includes a recording from the April 23, 2005 broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion. (Play Segment 6). Edited June 28, 2006 by Theodore Kloba
Leo
http://www.honkingduck.com/BAZ/honkingduck...43ed1652f9984f3 "Rock All Our Babies To Sleep" by "Jimmie Rodgers" Bluebird B - 5000 Recorded: August 11, 1932 Issued: May 1933 Different name; same tune (I'm pretty sure)? + yodelling on a 78 rpm record http://www.rounder.com/?id=album.php&catalog_id=5876 Short clip on CD Lonnie Robertson: Lonnie's Breakdown - Classic Fiddle Music from Missouri, Released 01/01/1996 http://www.townsend-records.co.uk/product....amp;pType=music Tex Ritter ( little before my time) Sounds like Vaughn Horton wrote a popular song in 1951, but don't know where he got tune from. Jimmie Rogers recorded 1932. but probably predates that too. 1998-132/030/6063 Rock All The Babies To Sleep 1951 New lyrics?? and music by: Vaughn Horton manuscript (from a website list of songs, but I don't know how to access them) http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/messer/...&Start=7321 In 1924 with his first recording, Rock All Our Babies To Sleep, blind Georgia's guitarist Riley Puckett (already a radio star) introduced the "yodeling" style of singing (originally from the Swiss and Austrian Alps) into country music http://www.scaruffi.com/history/country.html Under "Rocking the Baby to Sleep" the US Library of Congress had this: Composer Ben Williams; published 1884 in Cleveland OH by Brainard's Sons. Here is the original sheet music under view this item: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/mussmhtml/mussmhome.html Went to titles; scrolled down to the from/to with the word I was looking for, then waded through the few listed until I came accross the most likely one. Sorry can't give exace page. The search/retrieve function supplies the proper page, but only lasts for a short time. (similar to tune-a tron display) I used "Rock All Our Babies To Sleep" in Google. Does this agree with what you need for "transcriptions or other recordings"? At least it goes back to 1884. If not I've learned too. Thanks Leo Edited to add Library of Congress Reference and correct link Edited July 13, 2006 by Leo
