Roger Hare
Hm! The world of 'attractively-priced-entry-level' concertinas is a bit of a mystery as far as I am concerned, but, I may be in the market for a cheap instrument to take on holiday - I don't really want to take one of my real concertinas with me if I can avoid it... I just saw this on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cherrystone-Wooden-Diatonic-Concertina-Accordion-30-Keys-/282402160890?hash=item41c07b00fa There's not much information, no maker, etc. I was wondering if anyone here on c.net actually recognises the particular brand from the photograph? I'm guessing it's of Chinese origin, in C/G, with 'accordion-style' reeds, etc... Any comments/observations? It's sorta tempting, but I'm very wary. I also suffer from terminal 'short-arms-and-long-pockets' syndrome... Thank you. Roger Edited March 20, 2017 by lachenal74693

Mike Franch
I'm not an anglo player, but that buckle on the strap doesn't look like it would be too comfortable on the hand.
Anglo-Irishman
The photo shows the concertina upside down. In playing position, the buckle would be at the bottom of the palm-rest, so gravity would keep it clear of your hand. Cheers, John
Stephen Chambers
One thing that's hard to gauge in the photo, bacause of wide button spacing, is that these (at 7 1/4" across the flats) are larger instruments than "normal" 6 1/4" concertinas. Mike Jones
Take a look at the Barleycorn stock pages from Chris Algar at http://www.concertina.co.uk/stock-selection/?concertina=2958. The guy who owned it until Saturday was playing it at the WCCP Kilve event until he upgraded to a nice vintage Lachenal with this as the trade in. It works OK, sounds OK and may well be suitable for your purposes and is not too far south of you in Shropshire.
Roger Hare
Looks like one that Gear 4 Music sell. Not sure what the quality would be like. It does indeed - that gives me a little more information. Thank you. I'm not an anglo player, but that buckle on the strap doesn't look like it would be too comfortable on the hand. Yes, I noticed the buckled straps and they are a concern. I thought it might be possible to re-engineer the ends and then fit conventional straps. Thank you both. One thing that's hard to gauge in the photo, bacause of wide button spacing, is that these (at 7 1/4" across the flats) are larger instruments than "normal" 6 1/4" concertinas. Ah!! That may be the kicker - I'm almost sure I don't want a big, relatively bulky concertina, after all, I'm going travelling with it... Ta! Thanks. Thank you all - as always, very helpful. Roger
