  1. Thank you for your replies. There are so many out there willing to share their knowlege and experience. I saw the tip on using shims of card behind the chamois on another thread and thought ,yes that makes sense, it's often these little things which seem so obvious later that makes things easier. I did make a gasket for a nasty chinese job which arrived without one [ obviously no one tries these things before sending them out]. For this I used a bright yellow cleaning cloth from the supermarket, it worked but I feel the Lachenal deserves better. Best wishes to all for Xmas and new year. Geoff.
  2. Hello, The chamois gaskets on the end of the bellows assembly of my Lachenal anglo have been damaged by the use of various sealants [probably of the motor car engine type].They are not salvageable. Is there a recommended grade and thickness of chamois for this purpose? Thanks Geoff.
  3. John Smith's Ales and the photo of those huge pint glasses bring back memories of a misspent youth. If you're ever in Tas drop in for a drop of Boag's. Geoff.
  4. Hello Chris, No. It wasn't a bad day. I agree with most of your comments, but I didn't describe anything. My post was an attempt to"lighten' things up a little and to concentrate on the enjoyment factor.I read and learn from the posts here. I appreciate it all, but, whenever I think the technicalities are taking over from the joy and pleasure of music I feel sad. Regards Geoff.
  5. Gosh These things get very complicated. Is there a much lower level on the discussion forum. One which is ,perhaps, open to dingbats. No technical stuff,no abuse ,no. my dad is better than your dad stuff.Just something about enjoying ourselves and by doing so hopefully improving. Regards Dingbat.
  6. Dear Iqqunn,I'm a beginner so my reply is going to be very basic.I bought a cheapo 30b chinese.I don't like it.If I sell it I would be lucky to get 1/3 of what I paid.I then bought a 20b Lachenal in good order. I like it,I pick it up almost every day.If I decide to sell I believe I would get at least what I paid and maybe more. Regards Geoff.
  7. Dear Mr Mccabe, I think if you are are as fine a player as you are a Merchant Banker [rhyming slang} you will be very successful and I look foreward to attending your performances.
  8. Hello Nigel, Are you still there? Two weeks have gone by and we got together again. I made more blues than I did the first time but it's still fun.And I laughed and I sang and camped around the billybong. Geoff.
  9. Hello, It ain't Bill Y bong, it's billabong. And I was born and dragged up in a little village in North Yorkshire.Whose only recent claim to fame is as the chosen home of an interloper who wasn't a bad cricketer in his time. Incidently ,Ravensworth derives from the Viking Hrafen's Wath. But I digress.I ate and enjoyed many of my grandmothers rabbit pies and far from wishing their complete demise{not my grandmothers, too late.],I hope the rabbit family will continue to laugh and sing for ever.Geoff Lowes.
  10. Yes pay as much as you can and a little bit more.As for populating the world with concertina players, the time will come when we will need concertinamatosis. Hey rabbits are good but hell they have to be kept in check. Geoff.
  11. Hello Nigel. Two weeks ago I made my "debut" as a concertina abuser at the tender age of 62. I live in a small relatively remote town and a few of us decided to get together to make our own entertainment. I was TOLD to bring my concertina. We sang a few songs together and after a few beers some of us went solo and I was asked to " show and tell" my little treasure. I was very nervous being a bit on the shy side and like you can manage only a handful of tunes. I played and made mistakes but it was fun and I was Told that my concertina had to come with me to all future get togethers. It has helped me ,I am trying to learn one new tune for each session which are planned to happen fortnightly. Being with friends helped and having similar interests lets us forgive our trespasses. If you get the chance again Go for it. Regards Geoff.
  12. Hi, I've given this subject a lot of thought and more than a few cans of Boag's Draught. There is a "handicap " system used in Golf,Horse Racing,Athletics etc. which is designed to encourage both beginers and the more experienced. In Concertina concept ,the better you are the higher your handicap. This could be achieved by amputation of fingers [no thanks],removal of instrument buttons/reeds [no thankyou],addition of weights to players wrists [difficult to police] or EUREKA the best player gets the worst instrument.I am very bad. I know I am going to be inundated with offers of more top class instruments than I have room for and I promise to distribute these amongst the least/most deserving[after keeping the best for myself.] Please don't be offended ,it's all in fun. Regards Geoff.
  13. Hello ,Thanks ,Dave Prebbles article was well written and thought out. I have a small double cast iron glue pot and keep it warm on the plate of a coffee maker. The glass carafes always get broken eventually so there must be zillions out there. Geoff.
  14. Hi, This may be a crazy idea but who knows. What are your thoughts on using gap filling sealants as used in the building and D.I.Y. areas for fixing pads to lever arms. They have excellent adhesion to most materials are moisture, temperature and vibration resistant and set into a fairly solid rubber like blob which remains flexible.
  15. A short time ago,I think it was 1980 ,I went back for a visit to North Yorkshire. I listened to and liked the song alluded to in the Topic Title. I think the song was from Cumberland? Can anyone help me with musical notation. I have a 20 b Lachenal Concertina so it's got to be relatively simple. Thanks Geoff.
