Something For The Weekend?

Pete Dunk

Recommended Posts

I inadvertently posted a pulled quote from one of my earlier posts here which I have now removed. I don't understand how it happened as I was merely searching for an ABC which I then copied and pasted elsewhere. Somewhere along the line the whole of the very old post that I got the abc from ended up here.

For those who like a good 3/2 hornpipe here's one that I came across recently, it may well have been on this very forum but I really can't recall.

Didn't there use to be a "midi" associated with the "tune-o-tron"? I'm not sure I'll get the tempo correct on The Winter Night Schottische without a little help? Do I need to paste that into some other translator ya' think?? mmh

Hi shelly0312,

The mandolin people here :- http://www.mandolintab.net/

have an ABC converter here : - http://mandolintab.net/abcconverter.php

this has a MIDI button for playing the ABC. If you want to slow the speed of the playback then alter the tempo by putting a lower number in the "Q" field.

If your ABC has no "Q" field then then just add it yourself. (No tunes will be harmed if you do this!)

regards

Jake

Sadly the MandolinTab converter screws it up too. Bit by bit all of the online converters are being corrupted and if you want to continue using abc files it's imperative that you download and use one of the dedicated and FREE software packages that make life so much easier to work with abc! Q for The Winter Night Schottische would be Q:1/4=140.

Download and get used to:

ABC Explorer (my recomendation)

Easy ABC - a close second

ABC Navigator - my least favourite bit of software but it is well proven and totally bomb proof!

Ignore this at your peril, the online convertors are being made toast one by one!

Pete.

Thank-you TallShip; as always you are the wealth of information. I double appreciate that you explain why such is happening. As I read the descriptions I found your first preference did not seem compatible with my new Mac--so I moved onto "Easy ABC"--then my new mac computer scolded my for trying to download something NOT from the Apple store. I scolded back and I think I've got it all set up with only 2 extra clicks than I'd really like. And this new program did play a MIDI for me of that "the Winter Night Schottische". Now if I can just figure out all the repeats......? snort I think my fingers will get tired just playing once straight through!

This is a jolly little tune in a minor sort of way, I transcribed this today from a book published in 1740 so it may have a bit of dust left in the corners.

This is a quirky tune that manages to have the feel of odd meter which it isn't of course. Quirky tunes are sometimes popular so maybe someone will like it.

This one is quite a challenge and I still can't reliably get my fingers around it. Others of course may find it very straight forward, difficulty rather like beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

A new folk supergroup called Leveret are rapidly gaining popularity in the UK at the moment here's a tune by one of them, english concertina player Rob Harbron, who is well known on this forum. Quite tough this one, you'll need your thinking head on!

A bit of a departure here as this is a two part arrangement of Green Ginger from the Steel Skies suite by Alistair Anderson and takes a full three and a half minutes to play in its entirety which is the whole thing twice through. Listen to a midi version here, the voices are an octave apart so you can hear what each line is doing. This is a long abc file so I'm going to try and contain it within a 'code' window.
