Seriously, I spell pretty decent but I type terribly, often transposing or duplciating letters. Lucky I don't play English tina! So last year I put up a request for a spell checker, but was told that it wasn't on Invision's to-do list.

I wonder about CNet users who aren't native English speakers, if they actually have to stop and htink to read words like taht, teh, and wiht. Worse yet, what happens when they use an automatic translator program liek Babelfish or Google's online tools? Computers aren't nearly so holographic-minded as we humans. (Yes, I could read that mangled prose, which is even worse than my fastest typing).

Edited to note that none of hte misspellings above are deliberate! That's how I type!

Hi ragtimer

Ok; all kidding aside. When I add a post, or edit, or use PM, the menu bar of the forum software has a toolbar for formatting. On the top line, on the right is a button marked ABC over a check mark. Click it and an error message will come up that says: "ieSpell not detected. Click to go to the download page". It's the link in the post you quoted. It adds a spell checker to Internet Explorer. If you click on the CNET download mirror it takes you to here: http://www.download.com/3000-2378-10208550...&tag=button

It says:"IESpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell-checks text-input boxes on a Web page. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of Web-based text entry (Web mail, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your Web application already includes spell-checking functionality, this utility is faster than a server-side solution. Plus, you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications instead of having to maintain separate ones on each application"

Tthnaks ;)

If I were to choose between someone not posting because they fear that their spelling or grammar was not good enough, or that they speak another language other than English, then I would choose the posting every time.We all attempt where possible to compile our postings in the best possible way and the more complicated ones I spend some time thinking the post over before posting, but this site is about people posting, putting forward ideas, making amusing comments,

helping other players etc. What we do not want to do is to put anyone off posting,it should be encouraged and welcomed no matter how the posting is put together.

Hmm. I don't see that button. On the other hand, I'm not using IE.

My browser (SeaMonkey) seems to have its own spell checker, though, so Invision doesn't need to provide one for me.

From the comments here (and some of the spelling and fouled-up "formatting" I've seen in posts), I wonder whether I'm the only one who uses the "Preview Post" button to review what I've written and correct it before actually posting it?

We all attempt where possible to compile our postings in the best possible way...

I think the evidence is that we don't all go to that trouble. :(

Hello Dirk,

Go to the Firefox homepage and download the spell-checker! I've used it for ages and it works well enough although it does tend to use American spellings for some words - which I ignore! I generally have no problems with spelling but like others I tend to transpose letters when typing.

To answer Jim's question, I use the preview post function every time I post, often several times. I still miss the odd howler though. :(

hi Leo ,

do you have any suggestion for Firefox text control?

Dirk

If you go to the firefox extensions page Here you can download other language dictionaries to use with the built in spell checker (I think the firefox spell checker is built in for version 2 upwards) - there's a British english one that you can install. (The spellchecker is switched on in the depths of the Edit->Preferences->Advanced->General

I was not worried about non-native English speakers' postings -- these folks seem to be pretty careful. I was concerned about their attempts to read ours (my) sloppy typing.

My real question was: How careful should we be about fixing every little typo? Do a few transposed letters really cause trouble for someone?

BTW, one nice thing about this group is: very few nit-picks about honest errors. (Just a few jokes now and then).

Now to see if I have that spell checker button on the frame ... OK, found it,, wenet tot eh DOwnload, loaded it, will attempt intallation later. THanks, Mike K.
