Roger Hare
Ahem! I have an auntie who is 100 next month - not bad! I'm planning to send a recording of myself playing 'Happy Birthday To You' on the infernal machine (nobody can say that I'm not generous!). Question: Are there any more birthday themed tunes I could learn in the next three weeks?I can't think of any. Thanks Roger

JimLucas
Question: Are there any more birthday themed tunes I could learn in the next three weeks? I can't think of any. Denmark and Sweden each have their own traditional birthday song. I'll try to gather links within the next couple of days and maybe even see whether I can come up with singable translations. The Swedish song would be particularly apropos, as it says, "Yes, may (s)he live for a hundred years." While the Danish one tops off with "Delightful chocolate, and cake, too." Also, I used to know a Croatian birthday song -- the tune was the same as Gaudeamus Igitur, -- but I've forgotten most of the words and don't know which box of miscellany they're stored in. The bit I do remember translates: "As many drops there are [of celebratory drink], give to the life of [name the birthday person] that many years." There must be other countries with their own traditional birthday songs. In fact, I find it hard to believe that English speakers never sang special birthday songs before "Happy Birthday To You" was composed. Well, "For (s)He's a Jolly Good Fellow" seems to have been used that way (and still is), though it's not only for birthdays. Were there others? Hmm. Just now while checking on the current copyright status of "Happy Birthday To You" -- which turns out to be in dispute -- I came across this list of birthday songs in Wikipedia. Interestingly, the one listed for Croatia is not the one I mentioned above, which I learned 40 years ago.
Toaster
The Quebecois "Gens du pays" might sound nice on the concertina.
