Concertinas @ Tenterden Festival, Uk

Dear All,

 

Spare Parts (Bryan Creer, Suzanne Higgins and me) are running a part-playing session for concertinas on the afternoon of Sunday 7th. October in the White Lion Saddlery at the Tenterden Folk Festival, Kent. If you'd like the dots by post and/or a midi file of the music in advance, let me know. The session is open to non- season ticket holders for a modest fee.

 

We're also running a general music session in the White Lion that morning.

LEWES ARMS FOLK CLUB WORKSHOPS 2007

Workshops last a full Saturday and the tutor performs at the club in the evening. Booking forms are available from the club and can be printed from the website.

We went along to the part playing workshop and had a really good time. I was a bit worried that my Jack baritone might be too slow responding to keep up with the pace of the music. It's pretty hard work getting the lowest note to sound but the tempo was kept moderate for we lesser mortals and a good time was had by all.

My apologies to Valmai, Brian and other attendees who I failed to meet (Tallship for one!).

 

Kettle Bridge Clogs had a great day out at Tenterden. We danced at the Town Hall in the morning, followed by a team of Czeck dancers. Then we had a few dances at the station before boarding the train to Bodiam. When the train stopped at Northiam to take on water, we had another dance on the station platform. Along the route we kept up a good succession of tunes including several renditions of the Runaway Train. After returning to Tenterden, arriving to yet another 'Runaway train' at the request of the stationmaster!, we decamped to the Vine for lunch. Then we were dancing again outside HSBC bank, possibly within earshot of the concertina workshop, except that they would have been making as much noise ( :lol: ).

 

We had finished before the end of the scheduled time of the concertina workshop, but I decided that by that time, my brain would not have been responding very clearly to much more cerebral activity.

 

During the day, local TV station Meridian were out and about filming and recording. Kettle Bridge Clogs among others featured on the early evening news bulletin which covered the festival. One of the dancer's partners at home was primed to watch and record so I was lucky enough to be there and get a record of it as well.

It's like a comedy of errors John. The original workshop start time of 2.15 was put back an hour to 3.15 because of a scheduling cockup so you might easily have made it for the whole thing. Sounds like you'd had enough squeezing for one day though!

 

Stopped at Northiam station eh? I work at the other end of the village!

 

No doubt we'll run into each other at an ICA meeting in Canterbury before too long ...

Valmai had told me of the change when our paths briefly crossed earlier in the day. Kettle Bridge finished dancing around 3:45, and after a long day I do not think my brain would have managed anything more than playing familiar tunes on autopilot.

 

No doubt we'll run into each other at an ICA meeting in Canterbury before too long ...

 

The next Canterbury meeting of the East Kent Concertina Players (not the ICA) is due on Sunday 18h November. I do expect to be there.

Spare Parts had a jolly time at the Festival and met some very nice people. Tallship, many thanks for your recommendation of the cheap large case from Hobgoblin: it's just the job for my new 56-key baritone. I've shaped a couple of pads of thick foam for each end and decorated it with the proud emblem of the Cliffe Bonfire Society. I was impressed with the Jack baritone, too.

 

Looking forward to seeing you at one of our forthcoming workshops at the Lewes Arms (the next one specifically for concertinas is on Saturday 24th. November with Rob Harbron)

Apart from seeing John Wild's picture in the local paper I unfortunately missed the entire thing - unforgivable really as it is my closest folk festival.

Well that is my 2 minutes of fame over and done with . I have not seen the paper myself though I remember the photographer grabbing us as we were leaving the station.
