Brian Peters

Recommended Posts

We went to a very good performance by Brian last night at the superb little Lantern Theatre in Sheffield. It was presented as part of Off the Shelf literature festival. His subject was Songs of Trial and Triumph, some of the greatest of the ballads in the collection of Prof F J Child.

Great story-songs. One so spooky he blew the lights! Just right for Hallowe'en weekend.

Brian has dug out unique versions of words and tunes and also puts in examples that have passed into folk tradition in pub singsongs etc. He talks about the songs, sings unaccompanied and also with guitar, anglo and melodeon.

A tour de force and one that the audience wanted to go on for longer. If it comes round your way well recommended

CD available by same title.

Two years ago Brian Peter's work came to my attention through his album "Anglophilia". I found it inspired and delightful listening and was thrilled to learn he would be touring in my part of USA for several weeks. Brian sandwiched a house concert and "anglo the English way" workshop for our area in his busy schedule.

"Enthralling, a consumate folk performer" is the description I'd use concerning his concert. I attended on the strength of his concertina playing and was not disappointed, but left wishing I could listen to several more performances of his singing and ballads. Really good stuff!

Sounds like Brian's current tour would be a chance for those in the UK to hear the concert I was dreaming about. Don't miss this guy. He's great!

Brian is performing at The Islington Folk Club on thursday 5th November, starting at 8.00pm. The Islington Folk Club is situated in the upstairs room of The Horseshoe pub, Clerkenwell Close, London EC4. The evening is being combined with a special tribute to my late partner Rosie, who was well-known for doing floors spots there, prior to her move up to Newcastle. Copies of her posthumous tribute CD, The Bold Dragoon, will also be on sale on the night.

Is there any other way of obtaining the CD Chris; for anyone unable to make this event?

Ian, I am planning to advertise the CD here on C.net, which will be available for purchase from me at my home address. However, first, I wanted to see if I could put up a couple of tracks from the CD as MP3 files on the internet, and give a link, so that people can have a preview, but I am new to doing that so will have work out the technology first. Anyone can PM me if you would like a copy now. It's £11.00, including UK postage.
