Kohler's Hornpipe, Revisited

Regarding the tune we were discussing a while back: I was listening to the great John Williams Irish concertina/box CD, and tune 3 on track 13 kept nagging at me; it sounded familiar, but I couldn't identify it. The CD identified it as "PJ'ss Pecurious Pachelbel Special."

Ah ha: it's Kohler's Hornpipe, moved to D major and played unbelievably fast on the button accordion.

Searched The Session, and read all kinds of controversy about the tune: purists regard it as a sacreligious pandering to audience preferences, thoroughly non-traditional.

But it's listed as a traditional tune on non-Irish sites under the Kohler's name.

Making matters more interesting: apparently Natalie MacMaster plays a Cape Breton version of the same tune with a different name.

Isn't traditional music incredible?

It is... and so's Kohler's Hornpipe. :D

Just kidding around. I know nothing about its origins, but neither do I greatly care.

Like so many other things, if you want five different defitions of "traditional", just ask two people. ;)

But I don't either like or dislike things just because they're labelled "traditional" by someone... even myself. B)

Nor do I care. People spend far too much time worrying about purity.

Hmmm.. Jim, are you labelled "traditional" by someone?

I agree with the Jim's! No matter what the origin is, I have a lot of fun playing this tune and what is more important: I played this for several small audiences, including some Irish-fundamentalists (not from Ireland) and they all liked the tune and asked for the notes.

The most important: it's my wife's favorite!!

So thanks again Jim B. for introducing this tune in the forum ;)

Not where I can see it.

My "sense of humo(u)r", on the other hand, has frequently been labelled "baroque". ;)

They can't be "true traditionalists" if they learn from written notes! :D
