The Abbess generated some fine recordings and a lot of interesting discussion in August. Many thanks to all who participated, and let’s keep the momentum going into September.

For September, here's what I hope is a wide range of tunes. Please vote; active participation in these polls is the only way the TOTM will reflect the amazing diversity of musical interests on concertina.net.

Old Copperplate.

I’ve heard from several c.netters that the TOTM has been deficient in Irish selections. Here’s one suggested by one of those folks, and it’s a fine, driving reel. Play it fast, with the full Irish ornamentation, or give it your own spin. There are lots of examples on YouTube - here's one - and even more on Spotify..

Hambo Pa Logen

What, you’ve never played a hambo? For shame; they're great fun.

This is a simple tune, but that's deceptive; hambos take some practice to get the rhythm right, and believe me, dancers are pretty fussy about rhythm when it’s hambo time. It’s like a waltz, but not. Here it's played by the talented and versatile Anahata and Mary Humphreys, melodeon and English concertina, with some lovely harmonies.

Hop and Skip

Finally, here is a tune by one of our own, Jody Kruskal. I’ve been using this jaunty tune for my Northwest clog Morris team, and the ladies love doing step practice to it. Eventually it will find its way into one of their dances. Makes you want to step hop your troubles away.

Here’s Jody demonstrating the tune - on a Bastari, no less - and his dots, so you can be sure the notation is correct.

So what are you waiting for? Vote!

Remember, if you look at the poll results before you've voted, the system will record a "null" vote, which means you can't come back again and register a vote. This isn't Chicago, after all.

I'm voting Hop and Skip.

I love Old Copperplate but reels are well beyond me as yet.

Either way, I'm grateful for the runner up section.

Analysis of non living voter patterns in the windy city are alway interesting, btw. :)

I take a timeout in September - still have to catch up on July's and August's assignments (working continuously on Roslyn Castle already). Summer is always a time dedicated to the outdoors, so I'd hope for a TOTM break in Winter to catch up. Fat chance...

Anyways, fabulous selection as always. You're king, Jim! Thanks for your invaluable work! I've learnt and progressed (at least hope so) tremendously already from the TOTMs so far (might even be ready for a follow up lesson from Kurt by now). All thanks to you and everybody who's active on C.net TOTM. Are we ready to design a T-shirt yet?

That's really fun to listen to, great playing - but a bit disturbing to watch what the melodeon player is doing with his right foot...

I had minor surgery on my left hand shortly after I recorded and submitted "The Abbess." Haven't played a note since. Hopefully I'll be able to get back into it in a few days.

Quite similar to what I experienced on the right, prior to being able to submit "my" Abbess... Hope you'll get well soon!

There's definitely something missing whilst being unable to play...

I was taken with the Hambo (got distracted by all sorts of amazing Scandinavian dances on youtube), but cannot resist a tune called Hope and Skip actually composed on and for the concertina. Makes me want to hop and skip. Indeed, maybe I will. Thanks Jody!

best wishes to everyone's hands

Great dancing and lots of great tunes in Sweden, not just hambos or even polskas (a hambo is a kind of polska), and many of them even more fun than Hambo på logen, IMO. :)

How about hop and skype?

:D

Appropriate, considering that Jody gives lessons using Skype.

But depending on the quality of your connection, maybe Skype and Hope would be even more appropriate. B)

If you arrange a lesson from Jody where a decent connection will allow you to improvise with each other, might you be said to have achieved Hope, Skype, and a Jam?

Difficult to choose : I like the 3 of them !

Hmm  ?

Old copperplate is is too fast for me, anyway ...

For the hambo, there is no sheet ..

For the skype and hope thing, there is a sheet and I like it, so definitely I vote for it :)

Hope, Skype and Jam! Perhaps it wasn't a typo, but rather a subconscious commentary on my musical life -- the triumph of hope over experience. Because some day I will learn to jam. Perhaps at NESI?

As for Hambos and Polskas -- yes yes, let's hear and learn some fun ones.
