'contemporary' (pop) Songs To Sing/play?

I use to try to sing and play Van Morrison's 'Have I Told You Lately' (or, 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You') on guitar, and then on piano accordion (believe it or not).

I never liked the way it sounded, for me. Though, I do like the song, as recorded by both Van Morrison and also Rod Stewart.

But, I've started playing it on my concertina and singing it, and it seems to flow so much better!

So, now, I might look through my (short) stack of modern pop songs and see what else works.

I usually have had all I can stand of the typical pop song played over and over on the radio...but, if I can finally make a few of them sound okay, singing, I'll try it. They ARE very singable, usually!

Anybody else here bother with the radio love songs?

Do'nt know if it is really a love song to your standards, but you should really try the Tenesse Waltz. It is a great tune for improvising(zing?).

It is a great tune to let your fingers go!! Whatever they are doing, it sounds right as long as you can still hear the basic melody line in your head.

Just try it and let me know how this works for you ;)

I have heard that before, yes, and it it really nice....one of those that stays in your mind all day. I only remember a phrase or two, but, I probably can find it somewhere from an online search. That's a good one!

If Henk thinks Tennessee Waltz is a radio song, he must have a really old radio. ;)

Love songs on a concertina ... That would be serenading your Squeeze with your squeeze?

:D Hey, when ya start gettin' old, your squeeze IS your Squeeze! Heheh. (And, the old squeeze just kinda sits there with a wheeze...)

Anyway, that's okay, Henk. The only reason I've even heard a radio over the past years is because we had a teenager (now 19) in the house.

In fact, I learned how to play some of 'her' music on the accordion....one that I'll maybe adapt for concertina -- the Foo Fighter's 'Learn To Fly' and 'Walking After You.'

My husband went to the rock concerts with them, for the most part. I stayed home. I value what's left of my hearing!!!!

My daughter once gave me a Cat Stevens songbook, though....she tries to understand me....maybe I'll see what I can play from that book. I LOVED Cat Stevens...um, when I was younger....

:D

 Um, Kurt, don't know how to break this to ya, but there's a NEW little kid out there making recordings, a Nora Jones, and I think maybe she's made Tennessee Waltz a NEW one, again! :o :D

See:

Nora Jones, Tennessee Waltz lyrics etc.

My hats off to her! I'm especially impressed that she got that 2004 copyright on those lyrics! They are so hauntingly familiar!

My mind is going faster than I thought.

I have to admit that I don't much listen to the radio these days.

I remember now, I first heard Tennessee Waltz sung by Emmylou Harris. (Lyrics to her songs: http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/harris-emmylou.html

In fact, now several other songs on her albums come to mind, that I'd learned. Blue Kentucky Girl, If I Needed You, etc..

(Hmm...yeah, re the lyrics as done by Nora Jones, I don't quite understand about that 2004 copyright, but, I guess it applies somehow.)

What about a new radio and an old man :) ?

What in fact brought the tune to my attention is the version of David Bromberg. I came across the tune on an old tape I have. It is one of the hundreds of tapes that I have and that I would like to transfer to CD.

Well Kurt.. such a remark just one week before the Squeeze-in in Sweden...

Maybe it's really the copyright on the web site. Or maybe it's just false. I'm sure she couldn't copyright just changing "him" to "her". Many people made that change before she did.

My copy of the sheet music says "Copyright 1948 by Acuff-Rose Publications" and "by Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King". It also says it was "Recorded by Patti Page for Mercury Records", but lots of folks have recorded Tennessee Waltz over the years. Also, it's become something of a folk song, being passed from person to person who never heard a recording of it.

Yes, something seemed a bit odd, there, to me. But, with all the loops and links and twisty turns in the publishing industries.....well...

personally, I'm settling for making my homemade scrapbooks! ;)

(Then again, I'm no Nora Jones, either...heheh)

Copyright issues should, really, NOT be difficult or unclear, in my opinion. But, because of business, they get that way, I think.

"Should" is rarely the same as "is". And in the case of law, even when it's clear, it may be hard to find a copy, to know what it says. This allows people to make blatantly false statements (either out of ignorance, or deliberately) without being corrected. All too often these get propagated until their falsehood becomes commonly believed as truth.

But claiming copyright where there is none is just the flip side of using copyrighted works without acknowledging the copyright, essentially a "claim" that there is no copyright when there reallly is.

Speaking of Van Morrison, Moondance comes out really nicely. It's one of those whose fingering just seem to flow without too much hassle.

Cat Steven's version of the hymn "Morning Has Broken" is nice too, and lends itself to lots of pretty ornamentation.

I have an old LP by Ruth Welcome and the Milt Shaw trio called "at a Sidewalk Cafe" that I have stolen from at great length. Old chestnuts like "Under Paris Skies", and others in that vein. Beautiful melodies, seemingly custom made for squeezeboxes of any stripe.

Speaking of Van Morrison,

Yes, I thought of trying Morning Has Broken. In fact, now that I think of it, that's probably the song that prompted me to keep playing anything, years ago....

My Finnish great-aunt was the organist for her Lutheran church (though, I was not a Lutheran...was forced to be Baptist). I loved going to visit them when I was younger, and I brought my Cat Stevens book to try on her piano, once. SHE COULD PLAY MORNING HAS BROKEN!! I was amazed. I thought she could only play church stuff.

Even more amazing was to find out that it IS 'church stuff!'

So, that was cool, and my great old great-aunt was suddenly very cool....I even got back to crocheting, which she taught me. :D

Anyway...I thought I read, somewhere at the site about the Button Box NE Squeeze-In, too, that someone played a nice rendition of it....one year. But, I'd have to search to find that, if I even saw it.

Moondance...that's a great one. I wore it out on the guitar, though...it'll be a while before I want to try it on the EC!

Not sure if this counts as the kind of song you were after but I've just been fiddling about with Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" on my G/D box. The song by Nine Inch Nails that became Johnny Cash's last "hit" - "Hurt" - also comes out very nicely on anglo - but it's probably one for singing and playing rather than attempting instrumentally as the melody isn't really strong enough to support itself when played alone.

Cheers

Stuart
