Recommended Posts

Next meeting of Midland Concertina Group:

Saturday 4th November 2017.

Arnold United Reformed Church Hall

Calverton Road

Arnold

Nottingham

NG5 8FQ

(Opposite the entrance to Surgeys Lane)

Starts 13:00, ends 17:00.

All welcome.

A typical meeting is 10 to 20 people with a mix of Anglos, English and duets. Occasionally a partner will come along and join in with another instrument.

Format is that everyone takes a turn to play unless they prefer just to listen. Most people play solo, but there are some who play as duos or trios. Many play by ear, many play from the dots. Any style of music is welcome, and there is usually a variety of English, Scottish and Irish music as well as Americana, European tunes, music hall, classical, hymn tunes - anything goes. Very occasionally, someone will sing and play at the same time.

There are often tunes there anyone can just join in. In the interval, there is usually a short informal workshop with "as many as will" learning a simple piece in parts which they play together later in the afternoon.

There is no formal admission charge, but a voluntary donation towards the hall hire is encouraged. Tea, coffee and biscuits freely available all afternoon.

It was a great meeting. Around 17 people (with some coming and going so I lost count) and including 3 first timers, one of whom had driven to Nottingham from Boston and played duet exceedingly well.

Organiser, Alan Davies, played a couple of most excellent 1920s jazz numbers. The resident trio, Behind the Times, did some set pieces. Two pairs played as duos.

The split was about 13 playing from the dots and 2/3 playing without.

There were probably 30 or more instruments in the room including Anglo, English and duet, 3 baritone Anglos (including a lovely one in F/C), and one piccolo Anglo.

A huge variety of tunes from Morris tunes, self-penned tunes, ITM, show tunes, classical, Disney sound tracks tunes.

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Next meeting roughly 6 months time. Details to follow.
