Patrick McMahon
In my experience of buying things at these local auctions, you end up paying between a quarter and a third more than the hammer price, once buyer premium and VAT are added. And that's if you pick up the item, and pay no delivery and handling charge, which can add significantly more. And it's a bit of a grey area, who loses out, if your item, that you have paid for, and paid to be delivered, doesn't turn up, but gets lost in transit. The auction houses use vague language, like "delivery can be arranged, for a fee". If I can't go to the auction and collect the item, I would rather not bid. This concertina made £95, which would probably be about £125 with premium etc, before delivery costs. Not cheap for what it is, considering that you don't know if it's got any reeds, whether they are steel or brass, and you've only seen one poor photo of one end. Let's hope the buyer got lucky, and it's a nice one.
