mikep1
Forum users may be interested in an new album, MBIRA KOROSITINA featuring concertina, mbira and vocals from Chartwell Dutiro and Mike Parnell. fRoots office staff have just nominated it 'recommendation of the week' on their facebook site. Samples from the album can be heard on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBNJdiEZOlo The album can be purchased at: http://mbirakorositina.madefreshly.com/ This website also has a few more details of about the album. Thanks, Mike Parnell
mikep1
In response to some questions, the concertinas used were anglos: a Connor G/D and a W.Jeffries Bb/F/Eb/Ab and the aim was to create the feel of interlocking concertina parts, similar to the way in which mbiras play together (which also evolved into the interlocking guitar parts of the Bhundu Boys, Four Brothers et al.). Hope you enjoy and do let me know if you have any further questions, Thanks Mike
mikep1
Just a quick update: A USA purchaser let us know that the website was adding additional post and packing beyond the stated price of £13.99 to the USA which already included postage. This has now been rectified. Apologies if anyone else has been affected by this, and we hope things will run smoothly now The UK price of £10.99 with free post and packing was fortunately not affected by this glitch. Do let us know if there are any other problems though, Thanks Mike
Jody Kruskal
What a delightful intersection between Tobin’s Favorite and Shona Mbira. Excellent! Thanks for making this album.
mikep1
Thanks for that Jody, praise from an expert is most appreciated! I think we are getting reviewed in fRoots this month so fingers crossed (is that the concertina equivalent of 'break a leg' for actors?)
mikep1
Very pleasingly the album has been featured on the fRoots playlist for this month, which means you can listen to the whole of the first track 'Jairosi' on the podcast at: http://froots.podomatic.com/entry/2014-07-15T02_00_00-07_00 Mike
mikep1
Rather surprisingly for a concertina album, we have had some plays on Tom Ravenscroft's show on 6music, most lately last friday, but also on his podcast. This means you can listen to two tracks for the next few weeks and put them on your BBC playlist if you have one. He does seem to like it
mikep1
Many thanks to those who have purchased this album already. This is just a reminder in case any forum members in the UK, Europe or USA want to purchase it as a stocking filler or present for a world music and/or concertina fan! The album is available at: http://mbirakorositina.madefreshly.com We have just had a very good four star review in Songlines magazine "captivating ambiance" "a very impressive fusion album of seemingly improbably sounds" Thanks, Mike
