Cover Of Scottish Hornpipe On Crane Duet By Me...

Hi there,

this is a tune called The Firth House. I found it a few years ago in this absolutely brilliant collection:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Caledonian-Companion-Alastair-Hardie/dp/0946868085

Here is my (as of yet) single voice cover:

The recording on the CD that comes with the book is by Aly Bain and qualifies as one of the most beautiful musical renditions I've ever heard (he tails it with a Skinner reel named Mrs. Forbes Leith which I find too hard to play yet). I can't claim to have come even remotely close to his outstanding playing, but nevertheless I've a had a great time studying it and hopefully learned a little bit on the way. All remarks are very welcome and appreciated.

Thanks for listening and enjoy, Ruediger

Thank you for reminding me of that book. My copy has slowly worked its way towards the bottom of the pile, as newer books landed on top.

I got no record with the book. Though it does refer to a companion recording, it must have been sold separately.

I did like your renditon of the Firth House.

best wishes

When the book first came out, the companion recording was an LP!

I go back to the book from time to time.

I have met the author occasionally, and heard his late father, Bill Hardie, playing fiddle several times.

I don't know if Topic still have the recording which had Bill Hardie on one side, and original Scott Skinner recordings on the other.

Nice tune. Searched for notation, but couldn't find it, so I transcribed from your playing, and now I'm well on my way to memorizing it. (On the English. Been tight for time this year, and my Crane playing needs much work.) Looking forward to hear what you develop for harmony, chords, or whatever. :) (One possible "whatever" might be playing the tune in parallel octaves in the two hands?)

I did find notation in PDF form for Mrs. Forbes Leith. I'd really like to hear how Aly stitches the two tunes together and what tempo he uses for each.

In the meantime, I can see why you might be struggling with Mrs. FL, since on your Crane you almost certainly have to cross into the left hand for the melody notes below middle C. But since you have to do that for some notes, consider the following (at least while playing melody-only): The Bb's in measures 9, 10, 13, and 14 and the F's in measures 11 and 12 are available in both hands, so play them all in the left hand (maybe also the Eb and D in measure 15), but all the other notes in those measures in the right hand. And please let me/us know what you think of that technique.

One more thing: In Mrs. Forbes Leith notation I've linked to, I'm pretty sure that the Bb in measure 3 should be a G. Rüdioger, maybe you could check that against Aly's recording?

Hi Jim,

glad you like the tune. I attach the sheet music for both tunes (there shouldn't be copyright issues involved, so I make it public).

The rest of your observations will be address by PM.

Thanks!

BTW, which Bb are you referring to? The measure number is missing in your post... the score in the Hardie book is exactly the same as yours...

Oops! I don't know where the number "3" went, but I've edited the post, so it's there, now.

And your transposed transcription confirms what I suspected, since your 5th note in measure #3 is a B, which would be a G in the key of Bb. The Bb in the copy I linked to just sounded wrong.
