Concertinas on Scottish TV

Recommended Posts

I read in Friday's newspaper a preview of a two-part documentary series coming up on BBC2 Scotland.

Phil Cunningham's Grace Notes

is an exploration of religious music in Scotland.

The programme includes a pair of concertina players who have long played for gospel meetings.

They reminisce about "teams of concertina players" playing for gospel missions.

The first programme was on BBC2 Scotland on Saturday 14th February at 8pm, and the second will be on 21st February.

I don't know if it will be broadcast UK wide, but it should be worth keeping a look-out for it.

The programme is a historical survey, so I expect the concertina players will be in the second programme.

PS I intended this to be posted on Friday when I read the preview, but internet problems prevented me. Still, I've got this out in time for the second programme.

PPS Not having TV, I don't know what was included in the first programme, but I would expect it to have covered older topics, with the second programme covering present day players.

It's up on BBC iPlayer (for UK viewers). No concertinas in this episode, mainly pre-Reformation choral stuff.

Hi David, I just watched prog 2 on iPlayer.

The two players were GORDON HAXTON & PETER DONALD, from the Glasgow area I believe.

Two great musicians with really wonderful Concertinas & an interesting story to tell of the evangelical roll of the Concertina in Scotland ... well worth checking out.

I feel Phil Cunningham is an excellent presenter too, very relaxed & he comes across as very natural.

Cheers

Dick
