OK, this has motivated me to resurrect a web page originally made by Nick Robertshaw and Bill Brown back in 1998 featuring Nick's original bawdy song "Hot Meat" with animated illustrations by Bill Brown. The original page is lost forever, but I grabbed the graphics and text and remade it a few years ago, adding a sound clip of Nick performing the song. I no longer host my own website, but I found I can put it on Dropbox - so here goes: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/61700296/Nick/Hot_Meat%21_A_bawdy_song_of_contravegitarianism..html

More about Bill Brown, including his artwork: http://www.wmlbrown.com

Ah, how well I remember him singing this. Other Foggy Bottom Morris men occasionally revive the song during pub stops, but it's not the same.

Hey Jim...........may be thread creeping here but can you put up Nick playing "Picking Up the Meadows" ?

I've got it but can't seem to post it.

Not a video, more is the pity but a consummate piece of concertina playing.

Robin - Your question confused me until I did some googling. On my copy of "A Night With Big Nick," that tune is labeled "Old Black Joe." But on the REmembering Big Nick page it's labeled "Picking Up the Meadows." Don't know the source of the confusion.

Here's the link to the tune: http://rememberbignick.pbworks.com/f/06+Old+Black+Joe.mp3

The video I keep listening to/watching is this one -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wcmkm5MevI&feature=related "Waltz for Hendrik" by Mannie Erasmus. To my mind, it's a lovely, understated demonstration of graceful music-making by a totally comfortable, mature artist. Does anyone by any chance know of sheet music for this piece? I'm not musician enough to transcribe it off the video. As close as I can figure it, he's playing in the key of G# !

Confusion cleared up. I asked Jim Lewis, and the tune on "A Night With Big Nick" is indeed Jim's Picking Up the Meadows.. The name came from his then-very-young son. Don't know how it got mislabeled Old Black Joe.Whatever the name, it's a great tune, and as you would expect Nick did a great job with it.
