If memory serves, concertina maker Chris Ghent sometime back in a post nicely summarized three basic shapes in reed profiling: A "chisel" shape with a gradual taper toward the tip used for shorter reeds; a fairly even (still profiled) shape for medium length reeds; A "scooped" shape with greater thickness at the base and tip used for longer, lower reeds.

 

 

Once profiled the sheet of spring steel is sheared into individual reed

That would be me though I call the shapes "wedges, bars and bellies..."

 

I don't envy anyone trying to file a preprofiled sheared blank to size for a frame. The thinnest section is hungry for the file. In the same way as, when you are turning you are at some level always turning a cone, when filing a preprofiled wedge reed blank you are always filing a triangle.
