Matusewitch Connection

Recommended Posts

I was wondering, did Boris Matusewitch service the instruments used by his students? I restored one of these instruments and was delighted at the quality of the reeds which had previously been re-tuned to modern pitch.

Boris did not do his own repairing. He mostly used Alex's Accordion repair shop on 48th Street although also used Accordion-o-rama which at the time had a Wheatstone-trained repair person. I recall reading that Alex finally retired at the age of 90!

Contact Randy Stein (search members). He studied with both Boris and Serge M.

Thank you, David and Richard.

Hi, folks. This is Eric Matusewitch, Boris' son. While my father did not do major concertina repairs, he was quite handy at more minor repairs, such as fixing loose mole skins on the reeds. He had to be handy, because years earlier--when he toured the US with dance partner Rod Strong--he found himself in small towns with no bellows repair shops. Although I never learned to do minor repairs, I often watched my father repair his and his students' instruments. Hope you find this helpful.

Thank you, Eric. I appreciate the added information. Although your father likely did not re-tune the instrument, he undoubtedly would have known where to refer major work on his students' instruments. There were two labels on the instrument case - the name and address of the owner, and the name and location of your father's studio. Mike
