Charles_Mackay
Has anyone out there thought of or made an arrangement of the aria for Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 by Villa-Lobos? It is normally for soprano voice with cello accompaniment and I wondered if anyone had tried to see if this sounds OK on the concertina. JimLucas
Villa Lobos himself wrote arrangements where the 8 cellos were replaced by either piano or guitar (two separate arrangements). I used to do this with a friend who plays classical guitar. He, of course, did the guitar arrangement, and I played the soprano's part on my treble English. We thought it sounded great. More significantly, so did most of the other people who heard us. :-)
Charles_Mackay
Hi Jim, I live in the UK and got a piano/voice arrangment which of course will suit the concertina just fine. In A minor and from Associated Music Publishers. Now all I need to do is practice! Charles
Perry Werner
Hi: Maybe not right on the subject but I once played the Villa-Lobos' "Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra" when I was an aspiring classical saxophonist in an earlier life. This thread got me thinking about how I'd bet this wonderful piece would sound transcribed for English Concertina (with a small orchestra). I'm sure it would be a real tour d'force, but in the right experienced hands would probably sound wonderful. Is anybody else out there performing orchestral music with the concertina used in any capacity? I don't have much interest in pursuing this personally but the subject is interesting to me as was the orchestral use of the saxophone of interest to me years ago (and still is) . David Barnert
I have been involved in two classical orchestral performance with my concertina. In one, I played the 2nd violin (orchestral) part in a one-on-a-part performance of Bach's 4th Brandenburg Concerto. The viola part was played on a clarinet. Here's how it was laid out: Soloists: 2 flutes and 1 violin Orchestra: 1st violin, 2nd violin (me on Hayden Duet Concertina), viola (clarinet), cello, harpsichord. In another concert, I played (also on the Hayden Duet) the "Small Accordion" part in a performance of Kurt Weill's "Kleine Dreigroschenoperamusik" (Music from The Threepenny Opera). I wrote up a long description of the experience and posted it at rec.music.makers.squeezebox. Chris Timson
Is anybody else out there performing orchestral music with the concertina used in any capacity? Not full orchestra, but look out for the *wonderful* (bold double underline with extra emphasis) CD "On Cheviot Hills" by Alistair Anderson with The Lindseys. English concertina sounding not-at-all out of place with a world-class string quartet, playing a couple of marvellous Anderson compositions.
