Thought you all might enjoy this video recently posted to YouTube - Shirley Collins singing a May Carol accompanied by John Watcham on concertina and Glen Redman (drummer and dancer from Brighton Morris), followed by the tune and solo Morris jig "Southover" composed by Glen Redman:

It's a live version of one of the tracks from Shirley's new album "Lodestar".

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting this Gary - I've always found John's playing so magical ever since I first saw him play, close on 40 years ago now! I think it's the way he sits on the beat, never pushes the tune unnecessarily forward and gives so much space to the others. The whole effect is so calming - The Art of Zen and The Concertina...?

And here is a very recent interview with Shirley Collins on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) radio:

And here's a similar on BBC radio - but only available in the UK it says :(

Thanks.

Depite being in Canada, I was able to download the mp3 of the interview even though it said UK only.

It was interesting to contrast the two interviews which might have been made on the same day from the same BBC studio.

The 'posh' (Shirley's words) British version by a guy clearly more interested in European art music than Shirley's traditional music, and the Canadian interview by a singer from Newfoundland who really wanted to hear Shirley's music and wanted to swap songs with her live on air.

I thought that kind of British (well, English really) pretentiousness was a thing of the past.

Hi Don....... I'd like to very mildly take issue with you.

I listened to it......it's over an hour long and full of complete pieces of music, not snippets, so it's satisfying for the musical content as well as the interview.

If there was a bias towards the music played, it was Shirley's choice not the presenters. So her bias not his.

I thought that kind of British (well, English really) pretentiousness was a thing of the past.

He has a rich, plummy Oxbridge voice that may well sound pretentious but he was deeply respectful of Shirley and her music (our music).

If trad. English music is interesting to you, totally worth an hour of your time esp. if you like baroque music.

Included is a successful version ( I think ) of Barry Dransfield singing Handels "Silent Worship)
