Don Taylor
I have mentioned this in another post but I think that it might be worth its own thread. Once each year the University of Edinburgh runs a free 6 week online course in music theory (a MOOC). The next course starts in a few days time on August 22. To sign up, see: course The first couple of weeks are fairly easy but then it gets rapidly more challenging and the final project is usually quite a stretch. I have taken the course in the past and might take it again as there is always something new to learn. The associated forum and Google Hangout sessions are really worthwhile. You can ask any dumb question you like and get an answer or two... It is oriented around classical ('common practice period') music with a wee bit of jazz thrown in, but it is all useful, basic stuff. There is a recommended reading list but the book recommended is rather heavy for a short course like this one. I bought a second-hand copy but never used it. There are lots of music theory resources on the web and a bit of Googling will keep you reading. Zack, the main lecturer, often refers to MusicTheory.net which has lessons and lots of exercises (very important) that are appropriate for this course. Don. KevinBradfield
Don, thanks for this resource! I have enrolled in the course, but I see no links for a forum or google hangout, is this something they let you know about when the course starts? Don Taylor
IIRC The forums show up after the first class. Zack organized the Google Hangouts to talk about specific topics that people had problems understanding. The Hangouts were not formally part of the course, they were something Zack added on his own initiative. He is a really good guy and a great teacher, very down to earth. Some of the other lecturers and a bit more along the lines of what you would expect of a university lecturer.
alex_holden
Thanks for the heads-up, Don. I think I'll give it another go too.
Will Moore
I have enrolled, as I am currently playing mainly by ear! I have some real basics to learn! Thanks for flagging
Tradewinds Ted
How much does this cost? I couldn't see anything about that. Not wanting to register/sign-in until or unless I decide whether to actually take the course. Edit: Oh - I see in the original post that you mention it is FREE ? I was thrown off because the website had a link offering financial aid for students who couldn't afford the fees. I hope I'm never so poor that I need financial aid for a free course! So now it is just a matter of my interest, commitment, and schedule. Edited August 18, 2016 by Tradewinds Ted
jdms
Ted, it appears there's a fee if you want a certificate for it (or for it to count toward a certificate? Not quite sure), but since we're doing it for our own benefit rather than professional advancement, I see no need to bother with it. Not that $49 is a huge fee... alex_holden
The only reason to pay the fee is if you want a certificate and/or to financially support the university that is providing the course.
