I've noticed that bass reeds perform much worse in the open air on the tuning bench than they do in the instrument. I've also been told that low reeds benefit from the chamber being longer than the minimum necessary to hold the frame. Some but not all of the vintage reed pans I've examined had extended length chambers on the bottom few notes. Geoff Crabb told me they had a variable size chamber they used to experiment with chamber lengths when designing a new reed pan, so I decided to build one. Here's what I discovered. The final position has about a 30mm extension over the minimum length. #concertinamaker
